A tradition among the COMBS family of New Jersey says that their ancestor was one of the Scotch Presbyterians so bitterly persecuted in their native land by both Papal and Episcopal authorities and that the first Combs came over in the ship "Caledonia". A ship of the name is mentioned as early as 1699 as making voyages between Scotland and America; and she carried passengers as late as 1715; she was finally wrecked near Amboy and in late years, says Mr. WHITEHEAD in his History of Perth Amboy, her remains were seen lying in shoal water near that place. The first of the family named in Monmouth records was Richard COMBS mentioned in 1707. Some of the family located in the adjoining county of Middlesex.
