Reference number: P37-19

Place : Shediac
Date : winter 1857

The Hercules, made in 1854, and the Samson were the first motor locomotives of European and North American Railway Company. They were both Hinckley locomotives built at a cost of 2,695£ each and were two of the rare internal-connection locomotives used in Canada. Seen in this photo taken in winter 1854 at Pointe du Chêne, near Shediac: the Hercules locomotive horse-drawn along a snowy road to begin construction of the European & North American Railway. The firm Peto, Betts, Jackson & Brassey brought the two locomotives to New Brunswick.
