Before the advent of freezing, there were other means of preserving fish, which could be salted and dried to maximize preservation time. Seen in this photo taken in Caraquet at the turn of the 20th century, cod spread out on dryers also called "treillis" or vigneaux" owned by the Jerseyan company Robin-Jones.
