John Edgecombe was born in England in 1809 and immigrated to Canada in 1833. In the early 1840s, Edgecombe and a business partner founded a company that made horse buggies in Fredricton. Not only was it among the first such companies in the region, it was also the largest. In 1852, Edgecombe continued the business on his own on York Street. By 1870, John Edgecombe's company was the largest of its kind in Canada and employed about 50 workers. Edgecombe died in 1890, and the family business folded a few years later owing to money problems. Seen in this photo taken in 1969: a buggy made by John Edgecombe's company. This buggy had two passenger seats and a coachman's seat up front.
