Reference number: P93-CA-30

Place : Hartland
Date : 1950

The world's longest covered bridge (391 meters) is located in Hartland, New Brunswick. It was built by the Hartland Company, which was formed by local people from both sides of the St. John River. It officially opened on July 4, 1901, and was bought by the Government of New Brunswick in 1916. In April 1920, ice from the river ripped two spans from the bridge. But two years later, the government decided to repair and to cover the bridge. The sidewalk was added in 1945, and the bridge was designated a national historic site in June 1980.
