Place : Black's Harbour
Date : c 1950

The fishery sector is vitally important in several regions of New Brunswick, with each region known for specific products. The sardine industry is especially important in southern New Brunswick, particularly in Black's Harbour, owing to large sardine stocks in the clear, cold waters of the Bay of Fundy.
This photo was probably taken in a Connors Bros. plant. In 1889, brothers Lewis and Patrick Connors, who had been in the fish business for a while, decided to can different varieties of fish to preserve them longer. In 1893, they founded Connors Bros. Ltd. and operated several fish processing and canning plants. Today, Connors Bros. is Canada's leading canned fish producer. Seen here: women preparing and canning sardines.
