This 1946 picture shows potato pickers in Victoria County. The potatoes were harvested by hand, placed in wicker baskets and then emptied into barrels made from softwood. Some horses carted the barrels; others pulled a mechanical harvester to facilitate the work. By the 1940s, horses were sometimes replaced by tractors.
