The Gorton Pew Company was founded in 1906 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, through the merger of four established businesses, including Sade Gorton & Co. and John Pew & Son. Although Gorton Pew originated in the United States, it owned several processing plants in the Atlantic provinces, including one in Caraquet. In this photo taken in 1944 at the Gorton Pew processing plant in Caraquet: women salting cod before packaging the fish.
