Reference number: RS656-10-15-1

Place : Kedgwick
Date : c 1920

In 1864, Kedgwick's first inhabitant, a Scot named Cheynnes, settled. He was looking for solitude and tranquility and settled more then 60 miles away from all civilization. In 1910, John Richards built a mill near Hailes spring, where the village lies today and the place was named Richards in his honor. It is during this time that railway construction was at its best. In 1911, men came from all over to work on the railroad during the winter months and one man, Joseph Richard, decided to establish himself there.
Since a village named Richardsville existed near Campbellton, the Postal Service changed its name to Kedgwick from the Micmac word "madawamkedgwick" meaning "meeting of the two rivers", because it is where the Restigouche River and the Kedgwick River meet. The village of Kedgwick was incorporated in 1966.
This document is a town plot of the village of Kedgwick, circa 1920, and shows the owners of the different lots.
