: William Francis Ganong identified the Mi'kmaq name for Black Point as Maktope'tak: PO 1871-1969: in 1866 Black Point was a farming and lumbering settlement with approximately 31 resident families: in 1871 the community was on the Intercolonial Railway and had a population of 150: in 1898 Black Point had 1 post office, 1 sawmill and a population of 100.
