Located 5.37 km SW of Plumweseep and 2.26 km SE of Roachville: Sussex Parish, Kings County: the first settlers here were from New England and many Loyalists later settled in the area: first known as Pleasant Valley: PO Sussex Vale 1810-1898: in 1866 Sussex Vale was a farming community with about 185 resident families: in 1871 it had a population of 400: PO Sussex from 1898: included Lower Sussex, which in 1866 was a farming settlement with about 25 resident families: included Sussex Island, which in 1866 was a farming community with about 5 families: in 1898 Sussex was a port of entry, a station on the Intercolonial Railway and a town with 1 post office, 15 stores, 2 hotels, 1 furniture factory, 3 carriage shops, 1 iron foundry, 1 mineral water factory, 6 churches and a population of 1,800: Sussex was incorporated as a town in 1904.
