There are four options for accessing the cartoons. All the search options have their advantages but please be aware, the persons and issues options do not encompass all the cartoons available on the site. To view these, the full text search or browse by cartoonist features are required. Please note the browse by person function is in alphabetical order by the person’s first name.

A word of explanation on how and why the archives has augmented the information contained in the cartoons. The original cartoons as published did not come with explanatory text and rarely with titles or formal captions. Since editorial cartoons deal with items in the daily news, readers were familiar with the subject matter and the cartoons merely provided them with another way of examining the issue. Reviewing the cartoons years or decades later leaves the reader without this context, so we have attempted to provide some of that retrospective information. This information is divided among title, caption, and scope and content and also provides the text for the full-text search mechanism. Where possible the titles and captions are drawn from words in the cartoon.

The scope and content is our attempt to summarize what the cartoon is saying. It may or may not have been what the cartoonist intended: you be the judge. Since even a simple cartoon can say many different things, we welcome your opinion too. So if you disagree with our interpretation please tell us. Similarly, if you question the abstracts of the issues or the content of the biographies of the persons in the cartoons, let us know.
