Johnville – what a settler says. Article published in The Morning Freeman. – 21 September 1876. This article includes Irish-born Simon Cummins’s reflections, entitled “How I Got Along in the Woods,” which describe his arrival in Johnville in October 1861 and his “steps and experiences” over the next few years. After 15 years, Cummins states that he has “cleared and cultivated 150 acres and that he owns 400 acres, including three barns, a painted dwelling, horses, cows, sheep, lambs, and a dozen head of young stock".
