Copy of a letter from Father J.-A. Allard, East-Bathurst to the Hon. L. P. D. Tilley, premier. – 20 February 1934. – 2 pp. of textual records. Father Allard refers to the founding of
le comité, comprised of priests in the Diocese of Chatham, in 1933. As president, he draws the premier’s attention to the fact that the Catholic population in northern New Brunswick has grown rapidly and that land is needed to establish homes in the country for “the surplus of our parishes”. He claims that this is the residents’ “natural right” and that
le comité considers it a civil and religious duty to ensure this outcome. He reports that over 200 applicants for green farms have been turned away over the past two years. Allard then asks for a meeting with government to discuss the issue. MC290-203-28 Fonds des archives diocésaines de Bathurst, correspondence colonization, jan.-mars., 1934, PANB.
