Excerpt from James Brown’s diary. – 12 November 1861-20 November 1861. – 6 pp. of textual records. James Brown, New Brunswick’s emigrant commissioner, toured northern England, Scotland, and Ireland, in 1861-1862, promoting immigration to the province. Here he records his trip from Liverpool to Dublin where he spoke to a large audience at the Dublin Mechanics’ Institute. Brown details his many activities in preparing for the lecture, which he delivered on 19 November. He also mentions leaving “a set of the Essays [on immigration to New Brunswick], Johnston’s report [on the province], and Dr. Sweeny’s printed letters [promoting immigration]” with the managers of the Mechanics’ Institute, so that this material would be available to anyone thinking about moving to New Brunswick.
