Historical and Statistical Account of New-Brunswick, B.N.A. with Advice to Emigrants (3rd edition) / The Rev. W. Christopher Atkinson, A.M. – 1844. – 23 pp. of textual records. Atkinson published three versions of his guide, the first in 1842 at Berwick-upon-Tweed. Here, in the first of two excerpts from his last version, the author warns that newcomers must work hard to be successful. He also notes that immigrants who come to New Brunswick will encounter fewer “privations or dangers” than those who choose New Zealand and Australia and that “Many of the pleasures of civilized life” are within reach of people with modest incomes. In the second excerpt, Atkinson offers advice as to selection of sailing vessels and berths, supplies necessary for the voyage, essential items needed for pioneer life, and lands for settlement.
