Welcome your Majesty

On 28 July 1959, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh arrived in New Brunswick to begin the final leg of their 45-day tour of Canada that had opened in Newfoundland on 18 June. This visit to the province had a special “Down East” flavour. The Royal couple was treated to an evening of harness racing, a walk in the park, and a meal of salmon and fiddleheads. At Fredericton, a 100-man honour guard from the 2nd Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada was waiting to welcome The Queen and Prince Philip when they landed at Fredericton airport. Highlights of the New Brunswick tour included a Queen’s Scout recognition ceremony in Fredericton, a visit to the DVA Hospital in Lancaster, and a walkabout in Victoria Park, Moncton. At Pointe-du-Chêne, the Royal couple visited briefly with the bereaved families of fishermen who had perished in a violent storm off Escuminac on 19-20 June 1959.
