The 1976 Royal Visit

Her Majesty’s visit to New Brunswick in 1976 opened at Fredericton on 15 July. Following the official welcome at the Legislative Assembly Building and a brief stop at City Hall, The Queen and Prince Philip travelled to Woolastook Provincial Park. Here they toured the Boy Scout Jamboree campsite, picnicked with an estimated 3,500 schoolchildren, and viewed a cultural panorama that included performances by Les jeunes chanteurs d’Acadie and the Kiwanis Steel Band. A tour of Kings Landing Historical Settlement, a provincial dinner, and fireworks rounded out the first day’s activities. Day two of the Royal tour was spent on the Miramichi. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh arrived by air at CFB Chatham where they witnessed a special Armed Forces programme and attended a provincial luncheon. Visits to Chatham and Newcastle and a tour of the Burchill operations at Nelson-Miramichi concluded Her Majesty’s third visit to New Brunswick.
