Administrative History
Ewalt van Walsum was born in 1928 in the Netherlands. He obtained a Masters of Science
in Civil Engineering from Delft Technolgoical University, Netherlands, in 1952 and
a Masters of Science in Structural Engineering from McGill University in 1955.
He had an early connection with New Brunswick while employed from 1953 to 1955 as
a Project Engineer for the Foundation of Canada Engineering Corporation Limited
of Montreal. During this period he was involved in the design and construction supervision
of the Jemseg River Bridge, the Princess Margaret Bridge, and the Hugh John Flemming
Bridge.
His first work with tidal power occurred during his employment as a partner with
Per Hall and Associates of Montreal where he carried out two studies related to
the development of improved construction methods for tidal power plants in the Bay
of Fundy for the Atlantic Tidal Power Programming Board.
He was General Manager of Tidal Power Consultants Ltd. from 1981 to 1988 (Vice-President
from 1982) and participated in almost all Government-sponsored Fundy tidal power
studies from 1966, including work for Tidal Power Corporation of Nova Scotia and
the Bay of Fundy Tidal Power Review Board, an agency of the governments of Canada,
Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. After his return to private practice he continued
to promote tidal power, meeting with politicians and power company and university
officials suggesting courses in tidal power development at a maritime university
and donating his tidal power files to the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick.

Scope and content
The material in this fonds relates to tidal power, conditions in tidal areas that
would impact on the development of tidal power, engineering and mathematical aspects
of tidal power plants, socio-economic, technical and economic appraisals, costing,
and environmental implications of tidal power plants, and of wave and tidal energy.
It is primarily unpublished items in the form of technical engineering studies,
models and designs from universities and consultants; proceedings of conferences
and workshops; which include memos to government, and a collection of letters to
the editor. The records relate primarily to the Bay of Fundy, but also to Passamaquoddy
Bay, Cobscook Bay in Maine, Ungava Bay, Gulf of St. Lawrence, British Columbia,
Garolin, Korea, Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel, Northern Ireland, Russia, France
and at a general level to tidal power in the United States.
