TROY, JOHN HERBERT (1889-1919)

TROY, JOHN HERBERT, pharmacist; mayor of Newcastle, 1918-19; b. Newcastle, 7 Mar 1889, s/o James Martin Troy and Phylinda Vaughan; m. 1912, Helen Sydney Caie, of Richibucto, N.B.; d. Newcastle, 1 Apr 1919.

After he finished school John H. Troy worked for a few years for the druggist Albert E. Shaw, who had stores at Newcastle and Loggieville. He then enrolled in the Ontario College of Pharmacy and acquired his New Brunswick pharmaceutical certification in January 1910. Two months later he and Charles M. Dickison opened the Dickison & Troy Drug Store in Newcastle. They subsequently set up a branch store at Millerton, but they discontinued it in 1915 and opened one at Blackville.

Troy was an active member of the Masonic fraternity, being worshipful master of Northumberland Lodge in 1917. He also belonged to the Oddfellows and the Highland Society and was president of the Newcastle Curling Club. He was a town councillor for a year, and at the time of his tragic death, at age thirty, was serving as the youngest mayor in the brief history of that office in Newcastle. The North Shore Leader reported that his back was burned in an accident which occurred at his home on Friday evening, 21 March 1919, and that this led to his death eleven days later. In its brief report, the Union Advocate did not state a cause of death. He was survived by his wife, Helen S. Caie, and three daughters.
