WILSON, WILLIAM A. (1864-1941)

WILSON, WILLIAM A., doctor; b. Derby, 5 Apr 1864, s/o William Wilson and Eliza Jane Davidson; m. 1892, Jeanie Bryce Murdoch, RN, a native of Galt, Ont.; d. Derby, 26 Aug 1941.

William A. Wilson's mother was a granddaughter of William Davidson, the founder of the European settlement on the Miramichi, and his father was a native of Co. Armagh, Ireland.

Wilson attended Miramichi schools and studied medicine at McGill University (MD CM 1890). He practiced his profession at Derby for more than forty years and, like other country doctors in that period, travelled countless miles on horseback and by wagon and sleigh to attend the needs of his patients. He was a member of several medical organizations and of the Masonic order. He was worshipful master of Northumberland Lodge in 1899 and again in 1929. In 1934 he was president of the Highland Society. He had musical interests and was the organist for some years of the Derby United Church.

Wilson was predeceased by his wife, J. Bryce Murdoch, and survived by three daughters. He had an older brother, Richard D. Wilson, who also took a medical degree at McGill in 1894 and practiced briefly in Chatham before moving to Colorado.
