WOOD, R. STERLING (1890-1953)

WOOD, R. STERLING, teacher and tax assessor; b. Douglastown, 5 May 1890, s/o James G. Wood and Mary Williston; m. Lily Stewart, of London, England; d. Newcastle, 12 Aug 1953.

A graduate of the Provincial Normal School, R. Sterling Wood was employed as a teacher and principal in New Brunswick schools for approximately fifteen years. In 1915 he was in England with the 28th Field Battery. He was teaching on the Miramichi in 1921, at which time he was elected president of the Northumberland County Teachers' Institute. In 1929 he was principal of the superior school at Dalhousie, N.B. He was back on the Miramichi in 1935 and was elected president that year of the County Conservative Association. From 1939 until his death in 1953 he was the chief tax assessor for Northumberland County. In 1944 he was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the Legislative Assembly. In 1948 he was appointed a director of the New Brunswick Association of Assessing Officers.

Wood was active in a number of fraternal organizations and was president of the Highland Society in 1939. He was survived by his wife, Lily Stewart, and several children.
