YOUNG, GEORGE MULLER (1867-1963)

YOUNG, GEORGE MULLER, Methodist minister, Chatham circuit, 1897-1900 and 1925-26; b. Richibucto, N.B., 19 Feb 1867, s/o Daniel Young and Elizabeth Lawson; m. 1894, Lida B. McLeod, of Saint John; d. Fredericton, 30 Jun 1963.

After completing the necessary studies at Mount Allison University, George M. Young was ordained a Methodist minister in 1892 and spent the next forty-six years in Methodist and United Church pulpits in the three Maritime provinces. A good deal of his ministry was based in New Brunswick, mostly in urban centers, including St Stephen, St Andrews, Saint John, and Fredericton. His second term in Chatham was as the last minister of St Luke's Methodist Church, before it was joined with the United Church of St Andrew and St John in 1926 to form St Andrew's United Church of Canada.

A minister of "wise judgment and broad interests," Young was a member of the joint union committee which brought the United Church into being, and of the general council which formally consummated the union. For some years he was a member of the board of regents of Mount Allison University. In 1929 he was granted an honorary DD by Pine Hill Divinity Hall. He retired in 1938 and spent the last twenty-five years of his life in Fredericton. He was minister emeritus of Wilmot United Church and an amateur ornithologist. He and his wife, Lida B. McLeod, had eight children, five of whom were surviving in 1963.
