CAMPBELL, FRANCIS CHARLES PETER (1862-1916)

CAMPBELL, FRANCIS CHARLES PETER, Catholic parish priest, Barnaby River, 1894-1905; b. St Agathe de Lotbiniere, Que., 18 Oct 1862, s/o James Campbell and Catherine McGinley; ordained 1892; d. Bakersfield, Cal., 18 Mar 1916.

A second cousin of Bishop James Rogers, Francis C. P. Campbell was educated at St Francis Xavier University (BA 1888) and trained for the priesthood at the College of the Propaganda in Rome. Ordained in Rome in 1892, he held a variety of brief appointments before being named parish priest at Barnaby River in 1894. He was a dedicated and active pastor who was given credit for having the church finished and for having a new presbytery built in 1895. He also worked to effect improvements in the public schools and sent several young men off to study at St Francis Xavier University. Another initiative of his was the formation of a local branch of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

After leaving Barnaby River, Campbell was the parish priest at Charlo for five years. He achieved a measure of financial independence in 1907 when he was the recipient of $10,000 from an uncle in Iowa. In 1910 he went to Vancouver and was the pastor of St Patrick's Church there for one year. His health failing, he then accepted an appointment in California, where he spent the last few years of his life. In 1912 he was in charge of the Catholic mission at Tulare, in the south central region of the state. He was fifty-three at the time of his death.
