CHARMAN, MILLARD KEMPTON (1892-1981)

CHARMAN, MILLARD KEMPTON, minister, United Church, Doaktown, 1941-48; b. Wallace, N.S., 10 Feb 1892, s/o Henry James Charman and Ambrosine Betts; m. 1916, Bertha Rattenbury, of Charlottetown; d. 17 Apr 1981.

Millard K. Charman was accepted into the Methodist ministry on trial in 1910. He later enrolled in Mount Allison University, but his studies were interrupted by World War I. He enlisted in 1915 and served overseas with the Canadian forces until the end of the war. He studied at McGill University in 1919-20 and then took a year's leave of absence. He was ordained in 1921.

Charman ministered in several different churches in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island before coming to the United Church at Doaktown in 1941 to begin what was the lengthiest pastorate of his career. After his departure in 1948 he again served in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, as well as at Hampton, N.B. He retired in 1960 and spent most of his remaining years in the Moncton area.

Charman's wife, Bertha Rattenbury, a graduate of the Ladies' College at Mount Allison, was honored by the Carnegie Hero Commission and the Canadian Humane Society for saving a companion from drowning. There were three children in the family.
