ANDERSON, JOHN (1812-1874)

ANDERSON, JOHN, businessman; b. Burnt Church, c1812, s/o James Anderson and Mary Murray; m. 1847, Marjorie Loggie, d/o William Loggie and Jane Urquhart; d. Chatham, 2 Oct 1874.

John Anderson was in partnership with two of his cousins, Alexander Loggie and George Loggie (the father of William S. Loggie) in the firm of Loggie & Anderson, of Burnt Church, which was engaged from the early 1850s onward in lumbering, milling, and general merchandising. George Loggie did not remain long with the firm, which in later years was also a major processor and exporter of fish.

Anderson was "a shrewd businessman of an undemonstrative disposition." At the same time, he was a public-spirited man who tried "to advance the temporal and spiritual well being of the community." Towards the end of his life he was ordained an elder of St David's Presbyterian Church at Burnt Church. When he died, the firm of Loggie & Anderson was divided into two businesses, which were subsequently engaged in similar lines of activity: A. & D. Loggie, the partners of which were Alexander Loggie and his son Donald, and J., W., & J. Anderson, the partners of which were John Anderson's three sons: John, William, and James Anderson. He and his wife, Marjorie Loggie, also had a daughter, Mary Jane Anderson.
