DANVILLE, VICTOR ALEXIS (1872-1957)

DANVILLE, VICTOR ALEXIS, grocer; b. Saint John, 23 May 1872, s/o Frederick Edward Danville and Phoebe Ann Carpenter; m. 1901, Anna Gertrude (Goggin) Flett, d/o Joseph Reed Goggin and Mary Ann Elizabeth Searle, and wid/o Lyman Flett; d. Chatham, 7 Apr 1957.

V. Alexis Danville's parents migrated from the Saint John area to Millerton in the 1870s and later to Chatham, where his father was employed by J. B. Snowball & Co.

Danville was baptized in the Anglican church in Chatham in 1883 and attended school in the town. Afterwards, he worked as a grocery clerk for William Wilson and Michael S. Hocken. In 1897 he opened his own grocery business, and in 1900 he bought the retail division of the Hocken grocery firm. He was subsequently a wholesale grocer in Chatham.

Danville was a director of the Miramichi Exhibition Association and a vestryman and treasurer of St Paul's Anglican Church. He was survived in 1957 by a stepson, Frank Parkin Flett. A graduate of the University of New Brunswick, Flett had an outstanding career as an industrial engineer in Ontario. In 1954 he was honored by his alma mater with an LLD degree.
