FISHER, GEORGE WELLS (1847-1933)

FISHER, GEORGE WELLS, Methodist minister, Newcastle circuit, 1899-1900; b. near Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England, 1847; s/o John Fisher and h/w Mary; m. 1st , 1875, Anna Maria Payling, of Nottinghamshire, and 2nd, 1889, Mary Jane Windsor, of Dalhousie, N.B.; d. Montreal, 17 Oct 1933.

G. Wells Fisher was one of twelve young Englishmen who landed in Halifax in October 1871 with the intention of joining the Eastern Conference of the Methodist church. The twelve also included Thomas Marshall, Robert S. Crisp, and William Harrison.

Ordained in 1874, Fisher spent more than thirty years on Methodist circuits in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. He was "universally liked" in Newcastle but stayed only one year, filling in between the terms of the Rev. John A. Clark and the Rev. Fletcher H. Pickles. In 1905, he transferred to Quebec. He retired in 1917 and resided at Prescott, Ont. and elsewhere until his death in 1933. His first wife, 'Annie' Payling, died in Campbellton in 1888, leaving two sons. His second wife, 'Jennie' Windsor, also predeceased him.
