FLETT, ANDREW LEWIS MORRISON (1890-1992)

FLETT, ANDREW LEWIS MORRISON, customs officer; b, Chatham, 14 Apr 1890, s/o George A. Flett and Evelyn Josephine Morrison; m. 1924, Alice Simpson, d/o James Simpson and Catherine MacLean, of Tabusintac; d. Victoria, B.C., 1 Apr 1992.

Andrew L. M. Flett grew up at Nelson, where his parents lived. He was educated locally and was a graduate of the Provincial Normal School. Prior to World War I he taught for short periods in New Brunswick, Alberta, and British Columbia. After the outbreak of the war he enlisted with a British Columbia battalion and served overseas for three years, until wounded and discharged.

Flett was living at Nelson and working in the insurance field in 1923 before being named assistant customs inspector at Newcastle. When the inspector, James G. Troy, left in 1924 after only a year in office, he was promoted to the position. From then until his retirement in 1955 he was head of what came to be known as the National Revenue Office in Newcastle.

Flett was an adherent of the United Church and an active member of the Masonic fraternity, being elected worshipful master of Northumberland Lodge for 1930. He and his wife, Alice Simpson, had six children. At the time of his death he was making his home in Victoria, B.C.
