FOWLER, ELIJAH (1827-1882)

FOWLER, ELIJAH, farmer and coroner; b. Ludlow parish, 18 May 1827, s/o Zacheus Fowler and Nancy Small; m. 1849, Jane MacAllister, d/o John MacAllister and Isabella Ogilvie; d. Doaktown, 24 Apr 1882.

Elijah Fowler's father died in 1831, and he grew up in the home of his mother and her second husband, John DeCantillon. He was a farmer in Blissfield parish except for a few years in the 1850s which he and his family spent in the Houlton area in Maine. After the death of his father-in-law, John MacAllister, he was the proprietor of the MacAllister farm, which was located about a mile downriver from Doaktown.

Fowler was a lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion of militia and was promoted to captain in 1867. In 1871 he was a coroner in Blissfield parish, and he was engaged as a census taker there that year. One of the most respected figures on the Southwest Miramichi, he had not reached his fifty-fifth birthday at the time of his death in 1882. He and his wife, Jane MacAllister, had five children. Their eldest son, Zacheus J. Fowler, was a civil engineer and assistant engineer for building the Intercolonial Railway through the county in the 1870s. Later he was a partner in the Ottawa engineering firm of O'Brien & Fowler. Besides William J. Fowler, the other children included Isabella A. Fowler, the wife of Samuel Freeze; Mary T. Fowler, the wife of Dr Ferdinand L. Pedolin; and Lily Fowler, who resided for many years with the Pedolin family and was Newcastle's first regular telephone operator.
