GILL, RICHARD JOSEPH (1886-1959)

GILL, RICHARD JOSEPH, lumberman and MLA; b. Barnaby River, 29 Mar 1886, s/o Thomas Gill and Sarah Masterson; m. 1926, Estella C. Power, d/o Patrick Power and Mary Ivory, of Nelson parish; d. Barnaby River, 7 Mar 1959.

After attending St Francis Xavier University for a time, Richard J. Gill joined his father's lumber manufacturing and shipping business at Barnaby River. He soon became involved in public affairs too, as a school trustee and county councillor. In 1923-24 he was county warden. In the provincial election of 1930 he was on the winning Liberal ticket, and he was returned in the next six elections, retaining his seat until his death twenty-nine years later. He was minister of lands and mines (1946-52) in the administration of Premier John B. McNair. During his many years in politics his brother Patrick Gill managed the family lumber firm.

In the late 1940s and early 50s Gill served on the board of governors of St Thomas College, and in 1950 an honorary LLD was conferred on him. He and his wife, Estella Power, had no children.
