ATKINSON, FRANK NEWTON (1855-1933)
ATKINSON, FRANK NEWTON, Baptist minister, Upper Blackville and Underhill, 1909-12; b. Apple River, Cumberland Co., N.S., 10 Jan 1855, s/o Michael Atkinson and Charlotte Taylor; m. 1892, Frances Elliott, d/o Walter John Elliott and Mary Vaughan, of Newcastle; d. Medford, Mass., 1 Jun 1933.
Frank N. Atkinson was trained for the ministry at the Union Baptist Seminary, which was conducted for several years at St Martins, N.B. He arrived on the Miramichi in 1890 as a licentiate to preach at Whitneyville and Little Southwest, where there had been no resident Baptist clergyman since the Rev. Samuel J. Archibald closed his pastorate in the fall of 1888. He remained about two years. He was ordained before he departed in 1892 and was also married in August of that year.
After he had served at several other locations in the Maritimes, Atkinson was called back to the Miramichi in 1909 from O'Leary, P.E.I., to be pastor at Underhill and Upper Blackville. Two years later he resigned at Underhill, at least, but did not leave the area. In 1912, after the departure of the Rev. Howard D. Worden, he preached again at Whitneyville and Little Southwest.
In the fall of 1913 Atkinson went to Truro, and during the next ten years he had pulpits in a number of communities in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. He later ministered in New England and retired there in 1922. He took a church on Grand Manan Island in 1925 but soon went back to the United States. At the time of Atkinson's death in 1933, The Maritime Baptist observed that, while "he was not regarded as a brilliant or scholarly preacher," he was of a "kindly, sympathetic nature" and "was always loved and respected by the churches which he served." He was survived by his wife, Frances Elliott, two sons, and a daughter. His son C. Harry Atkinson, with whom he was residing in Meadford, Mass., was also a Baptist minister.
