GREEN, CATHERINE ELIZABETH (1864-1931)

GREEN, CATHERINE ELIZABETH, Sister St Mary Gertrude of the Congregation of Notre Dame; teacher, and superior at Newcastle, 1901-02; b. Vernon River, P.E.I., 9 Sep 1864, d/o Michael Green and Ellen Murphy; entered religious life, 1884; d. Ottawa, 23 Jan 1931.

Catherine Elizabeth Green taught in the Congregation of Notre Dame's schools at Sydney and New Glasgow, N.S., Joliette, Que., and Brockville, Ont., as well as at Newcastle. She was on the staff of St Mary's Academy from 1896 to 1902 and during her last year also served as superior. "She was earnest and thorough in whatever she undertook....Her lessons were full of life and interest, [and] she knew how to appeal to and draw out the best in every pupil under her care."

Green retired as a teacher in Brockville in 1928 and was a patient in the CND infirmary in Ottawa at the time of her death.
