HAYES, JOSEPH (1864-1919)

HAYES, JOSEPH, doctor; b. Nelson, 20 Aug 1864, s/o Joseph Hayes Sr and Margaret Drinan; unmarried; d. Nelson, 28 Oct 1919.

Joseph Hayes's father was a native of Douglastown and a successful merchant with stores in Nelson and Newcastle. When he died, at age fifty-four, he left his family in comfortable circumstances, and for many years his widow continued to operate a general store at Nelson.

Hayes received his higher education at the University of New Brunswick, where he was the only student from "the northern counties" in his year. He may have been just the second Irish Catholic student to pass through the provincial university, after Michael A. Quigley of Newcastle, who was two years ahead of him. He took his BA in 1885 and later studied medicine at McGill University (MD CM 1892), earning first class honors. He continued his medical training in London and Edinburgh. He was admitted to membership in the Royal College of Surgeons in 1893 and became a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1894.

Hayes first practiced at Chatham. He was still advertising there in 1895, but he soon relocated in his home village of Nelson, where he was the sole resident doctor for the next twenty-five years. He was appointed a coroner in 1896. He was "one of the best known and most popular physicians of the Miramichi," but in 1901 he reported an income of only $400 annually, when most other doctors were earning twice as much. Many of his patients were poor, and he may not have collected as dutifully as his colleagues. He lived unmarried in his mother's home.

Hayes was appointed choir director of St Patrick's Catholic Church at Nelson in 1894. In 1907 he was presented with a gift, "in recognition of his many years of unremunerated service" in that capacity. From the time of its formation in 1917 he was secretary-treasurer of the Northumberland County Medical Society. A fraternity with which he was associated was the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
