BARRY, EDWARD A. (1886-1937)

BARRY, EDWARD A., Catholic parish priest, Bartibog, 1923-31, and Douglastown, 1931-37; b. Chatham, 16 Sep 1886, s/o Edward Barry and Elizabeth O'Kane; brother of John Patrick Barry and Francis Herbert Cranney Barry; ordained 1917; d. Chatham, 12 Dec 1937.

The son of a Chatham stonecutter, Edward A. Barry was educated at the County Grammar School and St Thomas College and trained for the priesthood at Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax. During the first several years of his ministry he had a number of short-term appointments in Madawaska County. In 1923 he succeeded Father Raymond T. Hawkes as parish priest at Bartibog. Eight years later he was transferred to Douglastown, where he was still serving at the time of his death in 1937, at age fifty-one.

Barry was survived by three brothers and five sisters. His brothers, who included Thomas J. Barry of Boston, were all lawyers.
