LEWIN, SAMUEL (1832-1877)

LEWIN, SAMUEL, doctor; b. Chatham, 31 Dec 1832, s/o James Davies Lewin and Sarah Ann Clarke, m. Anna Jane Kyle, a native of Ireland; d. Saint John, 23 May 1877.

Samuel Lewin's mother was the eldest daughter of High Sheriff Richard S. Clarke. His father, James D. Lewin, was a customs official at Chatham until 1838, when he was transferred to Saint John. In later years, he was president of the Bank of New Brunswick and a member of the Senate of Canada.

Lewin obtained an MD degree from New York University in 1862 and established a medical practice in Chatham. A student of his in the mid-1860s was Joseph W. Howe, a son of Davis P. Howe of Chatham, who also graduated from N.Y.U. and later distinguished himself in the field of medicine.

Lewin announced in 1867 that he would be giving up his medical practice and leaving the Miramichi, but he did not do so. He was later a coroner and the quarantine officer for the port. His sudden death in 1877, at age forty-four, occurred at his parents' home in Saint John. His grave is in Greenwood Cemetery, in the city. He and his wife had at least five children, only two of whom lived to adulthood.
