BARRY, JOHN PATRICK (1892-1946)

BARRY, JOHN PATRICK, lawyer and MP; b. Chatham, 23 Dec 1892, s/o Edward Barry and Elizabeth O'Kane; brother of Edward A. Barry and Francis Herbert Cranney Barry; m. 1925, Carmel Edith McCarron, of Moncton; d. Chatham, 17 Aug 1946.

John P. Barry was educated at St Thomas College and St Francis Xavier University (BA 1918). He studied law with George M. McDade and was admitted to the bar in 1921. He was McDade's partner until 1927 and then practiced on his own. He was "a fluent and eloquent speaker" and was regarded as an excellent lawyer. In 1935 he was elected to the Northumberland County seat in the House of Commons as a Liberal, and he sat until 1940. He was unsuccessful that year when he ran as an independent Liberal. He was survived in 1946 by his wife, Carmel E. McCarron.
