BEATON, JOHN ANGUS (1888-1953)

BEATON, JOHN ANGUS, doctor and pharmacist; b. Big Bank, Boularderie, Cape Breton, N.S., 1888, s/o Lachlan Beaton and Margaret MacMillan; m. 1913, Helen Alcorn, RN, sister of Archibald Stephen Alcorn; d. Newcastle, 26 Jul 1953.

After taking his MD from Dalhousie University in 1912, John A. Beaton came to Blackville, where his father had been appointed minister of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Since the village was in need of a doctor, due to the departure of Dr John P. C. McManus, he began a practice which he maintained for the next forty years. He was also a registered pharmacist, and his wife, Helen Alcorn, was a nursing graduate of the Rhode Island Hospital. At his death in 1953, at age sixty-five, he left her and a son, Archibald Beaton, a truck and school bus driver at Blackville.
