MCCABE, CLAIR PATRICK (1883-1968)
MCCABE, CLAIR PATRICK, accountant and business manager; b. Newcastle, 3 Mar 1883, s/o Andrew McCabe and Catherine White; m. 1916, Anne Alice Gertrude Lawlor, d/o William Lawlor and Louise Hamilton, of Newcastle; d. there, 1 Sep 1968.
The son of a locomotive engineer who drove the "Whooper" for many years on the Newcastle-Quarryville run, Clair P. McCabe received his schooling in Newcastle and joined the staff of the J. D. Creaghan Co. at age sixteen. He began as a clerk and later became the company's accountant. He was a director and secretary-treasurer of the company in 1936 and managing director in 1953. He retired around 1965.
McCabe served terms on both the Newcastle Town Council and School Board. He was a charter member of the Newcastle Rotary Club and president of the Holy Name Society of St Mary's Church. He and his wife, Anne A. G. Lawlor, were predeceased by a son and a daughter and survived by a son and two daughters. One of their daughters was Sister Mary Rose of the Convent of the Good Shepherd in Toronto.
