MCCARTHY, PATRICK ROBERT (1889-1975)

MCCARTHY, PATRICK ROBERT, Catholic parish priest, Sevogle, 1945-71; b. 22 Jan 1889, s/o Patrick McCarthy and Mary Lynch, of Boiestown; ordained 1919; d. Chatham, 27 Sep 1975.

P. Robert McCarthy was educated at St Dunstan's University (BA 1916) and trained for the priesthood in Quebec. After his ordination, which took place at Boiestown in 1919, he was a curate for two years at Rogersville and for two years at Renous. In 1923 he was assigned to the church at St Margaret's, and he was stationed there until the mid 1930s. He was then an assistant priest at Campbellton until 1938 and at Newcastle until 1945.

St James Church was built at Sevogle in 1911, but it remained a mission church of Red Bank until McCarthy was named as the first parish priest in 1945. A rectory was built in 1948, which he occupied until his retirement in 1971, at age eighty-two. He later resided at Mount St Joseph in Chatham.
