MCGRATH, FRANCIS C. (1875-1939)

MCGRATH, FRANCIS C., doctor and MLA; b. Norway, P.E.I., 20 Feb 1875, s/o John McGrath and Catherine Nelligan; m. 1909, Josephine Gallant, of Rustico, P.E.I.; d. Newcastle, 4 Nov 1939.

Francis C. McGrath was educated at St Dunstan's College (1897-99), where he was an excellent student, and was trained in medicine at McGill University (MD CM 1903). He practiced in Bloomfield, P.E.I., until 1909 and then moved to Newcastle.

In the provincial election of 1917 McGrath was a candidate for the Liberal party and won a seat in the legislature. He sat for three years, but when he was defeated in the election of 1920 he did not reoffer. He later served as a Newcastle town councillor and school trustee. He was an early member of the Knights of Columbus. His was survived in 1939 by his wife, Josephine Gallant, and a son.
