MACLACHLAN, DANIEL PETER (1861-1935)

MACLACHLAN, DANIEL PETER, grocer and MLA; mayor of Chatham, 1907-09 and 1935; b. Chatham, 26 Jan 1861, s/o Donald MacLachlan and Matilda McLaughlin; m. 1896, Isabel Kerr Edgar, sister of Mary Caroline Edgar; d. Chatham, 21 Dec 1935.

Daniel P. MacLachlan was a wholesale and retail grocer in Chatham for most of his life and was exceptionally active in community affairs. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1908 to 1912, a town councillor and two-term mayor of Chatham, one of the longest-serving of the almshouse commissioners, and secretary of the Chatham Board of Trade. He was president of the Miramichi Natural History Association from 1912 to 1914, and of the Highland Society in 1917. He was a member, chairman, and secretary of the Chatham School Board at different times from 1914 onward. He was a trustee, and chairman of the trustees, of St Andrew's Church and an elder for several years. He was later a trustee of Calvin Presbyterian Church in Chatham. He and his wife, Isabel K. Edgar, had four daughters.
