NOWLAN, WILLIAM JAMES (1893-1965)

NOWLAN, WILLIAM JAMES, Catholic parish priest, Blackville, 1950-61; b. Chatham, 23 Jul 1893, s/o James A. Nowlan and Martina Ann McIntosh; ordained 1926; d. Chatham, 3 Aug 1965.

The son of a ship pilot, William J. Nowlan attended St Thomas College and was trained for the priesthood at Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax. Following his ordination he served as a curate at Bathurst, Campbellton, and Renous. In 1950 he was appointed parish priest at Blackville. For the next eleven years he had pastoral responsibility for St Raphael's Church there and the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Howards. After his retirement in 1961 he made his home at Renous. He was a patient in the Hotel Dieu Hospital at the time of his death.
