SMITH, HUBERT T. (1888-1970)

SMITH, HUBERT T., Methodist minister, Boiestown circuit, 1917-20; b. Worcester, England, 9 Apr 1888, s/o Henry Smith and Alice Eliott; m. 1915, Rose Queenie Breadmore, of Reading, England; d. Treherne, Man., 6 Sep 1970.

As a young man, Hubert T. Smith worked as an office clerk in the school system of Reading, England, and took night courses at the University of Reading. He came to Canada around 1912 and was trained in theology at Mount Allison University. Ordained in 1915, he was based at Richmond, Carleton Co., N.B., before being assigned to Boiestown in 1917.

Smith served for the usual three years at Boiestown, and when he left in 1920 he went to Prince Edward Island. He joined the United Church in 1925. In 1926 he transferred to Manitoba, where he ministered in a number of rural communities until his retirement in 1964, at age seventy-six. During his later years he made his home in Holland, Man. His wife, Rose Q. Breadmore, died in 1958. At his death in 1970, at age eighty-two, he left two daughters and two sons.
