SMITH, WILLIAM (1801-1863)

SMITH, WILLIAM, Methodist minister, Miramichi circuit, 1856-59; b. Bingham, Nottingham, England, c1801; m. Helen B. Barry, of Nova Scotia; d. St Andrews, N.B., 21 Feb 1863.

William Smith was directed along "the path of wisdom by a widowed mother in a quiet English home." Later he entered the Methodist ministry and, in 1827, accepted appointment to the British North American mission field. He served first in Prince Edward Island and then on various Methodist circuits in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. He was at Point de Bute before being assigned to the Miramichi in 1856, and when he left in 1859 he went to Milltown, N.B.

Smith was known as a "profound thinker," a "careful reader," and an "able theologian," and as one who possessed a vast personal knowledge of hymns and hymn writers. He and his wife, Helen B. Barry, had several accomplished children. Their daughter Annie Smith was a member of the first class of the Mount Allison Ladies' Academy in 1854, and their daughter Harriet Smith was later on the academy teaching staff. Their son Stephen Smith was a physician in Woodstock, N.B., and their son Robert B. Smith was a lawyer who gave up his career in middle age to become a Baptist minister.
