STERLING, GEORGE HENRY (1842-1912)

STERLING, GEORGE HENRY, Anglican missionary, Newcastle and Hardwicke, 1871-73; b. Maugerville, 1842, s/o Daniel A. Sterling and Jacobina A. MacLean; m. 1873, Alice Burchill, d/o George Burchill and Bridget Percival; d. Morris, N. Y., 26 Mar 1912.

George H. Sterling was educated at the University of New Brunswick (BA 1868) and made a deacon of the Anglican church in 1870. He was posted in St Stephen for a short time and then assigned to Newcastle to assist the ailing rector, the Rev. James Hudson. After Hudson died in 1871 he was ordained a priest and installed as his successor.

Sterling left the Miramichi in 1873 to accept the rectorship of his home parish of Maugerville. He was the incumbent there until 1887, when he accepted an appointment in St Louis, Mo. Following a sabbatical year in 1893-94 he was named rector of the Episcopal church at Morris, N.Y. He retired from pastoral duties at Morris in 1910 and died there two years later. His wife, Alice Burchill, predeceased him in 1909.
