BLEAKNEY, WILLIAM A. JUDSON (1834-1914)

BLEAKNEY, WILLIAM A. JUDSON, Baptist minister, Newcastle field, 1892-96; b. c1834, s/o the Rev. James Bleakney and h/w Mrs Catherine Rider; m. 1865, Eliza Jane Vincent, of Hampton parish, Kings Co., N.B., d. Everett, Mass., 28 Feb 1914.

W. A. Judson Bleakney was the eldest of three sons of the Rev. James Bleakney of Albert County to enter the ministry. Ordained in 1860, his first pastorate was at Grand Falls, N.B. He later served at Petitcodiac and Oak Bay, as well as in several Nova Scotia communities. He came to Newcastle in 1892 from Barton, in Digby County.

While on the Miramichi, Bleakney had pastoral responsibility for the Baptist congregations at Whitneyville and Little Southwest, as well as the church in Newcastle. During the first winter he was given a heavy dogskin coat to allow him to travel from place to place in comfort. The rural environment appealed to his retiring disposition, and he was well regarded by all. After four years, however, the extensive travel and large number of church meetings had become burdensome, and he resigned and moved to Saint John. Although he was past sixty, he later had pastorates at Upper Jemseg and Newcastle Creek in Queens County. He retired around 1903 and spent his last years in the United States, where he had two or more children living. He was survived by them in 1914, and by his wife, Eliza Jane Vincent.
