AMBROSE, THOMAS (1832-1907)

AMBROSE, THOMAS, carding mill manager; b. Truro, N.S., 13 Aug 1832, s/o Richard Ambrose and Katherine Phillips; m. 1st, 1859, Margaret Flett, sister of John Flett, and 2nd, 1876, Mary Jane (Saunders) Crocker, d/o Alexander Saunders and Mary Jane Benn, and wid/o Robinson Crocker; d. Nelson, 30 Nov 1907.

Thomas Ambrose's parents arrived in Saint John around 1823 from Co. Cork, Ireland. His older brother John Ambrose, who was an Anglican clergyman in Nova Scotia, was born there, but the family relocated soon afterwards in Truro, N.S.

Ambrose came to the Miramichi as a young man in the early 1850s to manage the Flett Bros carding mill at Nelson, and he remained associated with the mill for the rest of his life. In 1891 he was also managing a carding mill which Thomas W. Flett was leasing at French Fort Cove. He was "a skilled dyer, fuller, and napper, and the cloth he wove was a first class winner many times at the Fredericton Exhibition." His income from the carding mill operations was small, however, and he supplemented it by farming and doing other work. He was a justice of the peace and served as a census enumerator for Nelson parish.

Ambrose's first wife, Margaret Flett, died at age twenty-nine in 1868, and his only son drowned in the carding mill pond in 1874, at age nine. When he died in 1907, as a consequence of another accident at the carding mill, he left his second wife, Mary Jane (Saunders) Crocker, and two daughters.
