BELYEA, WARREN HERBERT (1877-1916)

BELYEA, WARREN HERBERT, carriage and farm machinery dealer and military officer; mayor of Newcastle, 1912-13; b. 2 Aug 1877, s/o George R. Belyea and Mary Camp, of MacDonald's Point, Queens Co., N.B.; m. 1st, 1900, Adelaide Cleveland, of Harvey parish, Albert Co., N.B., and 2nd, 1907, her sister Cora Ruth Cleveland; d. France, 20 Mar 1916.

W. Herbert Belyea grew up at MacDonald's Point and proved himself to be a competent student. In 1893 he qualified for admission to the Provincial Normal School to study for a 1st class teacher's license, but he made his career in the business field. When he moved to Newcastle at around age twenty-three it was to work as a bookkeeper with the J. D. Creaghan firm. In 1908 he and four partners incorporated the Miramichi Farm Machinery Co. at Newcastle, of which he was named manager. In 1913 he was a director of the Miramichi Black Fox Co. at Douglastown, of which Dr Bliss A. Marven was president. He was a Newcastle town councillor for a number of years and served a one-year term as mayor. He was an officer in the militia and, in 1915, went overseas with the 26th Battalion. He was a major and second-in-command of the unit when he was killed in action in France the next year, at age thirty-eight.

Belyea and his first wife, Adelaide Cleveland, had one daughter. There were four children born of his marriage to her younger sister, Cora R. Cleveland.
