ANSLOW, JAMES JOHN (1840-1919)

ANSLOW, JAMES JOHN, printer and publisher; b. Middlesex (London), England, 1 Feb 1840 (bap. 15 Mar 1840), s/o William Anslow Sr and Sarah Arter; brother of William C. Anslow; m. 1st, 1865, Ann McKenzie, d/o John McKenzie and Jane Sadler, of Chatham, natives of Scotland, and 2nd, 1882, Kate A. Sutherland, of Halifax; d. Windsor, N.S., 28 Nov 1919.

The basic facts regarding James J. Anslow's Newcastle years are included in the entry on his brother William C. Anslow. In addition to his printing and publishing work, he sold subscriptions, acted as agent for the Eastern Express Co., and interested himself in other commercial sidelines. He was a trustee of the County Grammar School and a member of the Masonic order.

Anslow used the proceeds from the sale of his interest in W. & J. Anslow Inc. to buy the Hants Journal of Windsor, N.S., of which he was then publisher and editor from 1886 until his retirement from business in 1914. He was survived in 1919 by two daughters from his marriage to Ann McKenzie and a son from his marriage to Kate A. Sutherland. His daughter Florence Anslow was curator of the Haliburton Museum in Windsor and a local historian of note. His son, Harold S. Anslow, was his successor at the Hants Journal and publisher and editor of the paper until his death in 1952.

Notes

In the IGI entry on his baptism, Anslow's mother's name is recorded as Mary, but according to family history, she was Sarah Arter. When Sarah died in 1886 it was stated that she was the mother of both W. C. and J. J. Anslow.
